Sometimes we need a bigger cup 🥛

I was talking to a client during the week and we got to talking about pain and how it can impact our ability and desire to move and I was reminded of the cup analogy from the famous and funny physio Greg Lehman.

No before I go any further, I just want to say that is it beyond my scope of practice to treat pain. I am a movement teacher who loves anatomy and I came across Greg Lehman while studying anatomy with Breathe Education, and as it's impossible to study anatomy without studying what might go wrong with anatomy we leaned about the cup analogy.

Personally, I found this analogy enormously helpful. I was struggling with an old hamstring injury that sort of freaked me out form time to time, when pain is chromic is can become all consuming as we try to figure out what is causing the pain.

This analogy helped me to realise that pain is multifactorial - which would explain why it comes and goes as it tends to do. It also helped me to be curious about pain rather than scared of it - I found my thoughts on experiencing pain turning from catastrophe to ones of interest.

Now you might have noticed from Greg's cup analogy, he has put "Lack of Activity" in the cup as a potential contributor to pain.

Now there's a lot of other things in that cup that might also contribute to pain but, to me, none of them have a solution, to making our cup bigger, as easy as increasing activity.

And that's where I come in 😊

If you'd like some help increasing your levels of physical activity, helping you to build a bigger cup, then you're in the right place.
